Tannisho Postscript by Rennyo

In addition to the epilogue by Yui-en, the author of the Tannisho, the 8th Caretaker (monshu) of the Honganji temple, and Shinran’s descendant, Rennyo, added a postscript generations later which recaps the events that led to the Honan Disturbance of 1207.

Note: this section was not translated by Dr Taitetsu Unno, so I am relying on this translation instead.

後鳥羽院の御宇、法然聖人、他力本願念仏宗を興行す。ときに、 興福寺僧侶、敵奏のうへ、御弟子のうち、狼籍子細あるよし、無実 の風聞によりて罪科に処せらるる人数のこと。It was while the former emperor Gotoba was in power that Master Hōnen established and spread the nembutsu school based on the Primal Vow of Other Power. Then monks of Kōfuku-ji, accusing Hōnen of being an enemy of the dharma, presented a petition to the court to the effect that there was lawless conduct among his disciples. Because of these groundless rumors, the following persons were found guilty of crimes:
一 法然聖人ならびに御弟子七人、流罪。また御弟子四人、死罪 におこなはるるなり。聖人(法然)は土佐国幡多という所へ流罪、 罪名、藤井元彦男云々、生年七十六歳なり。親鸞は越後国、罪名、 藤井善信云々、生年三十五歳なり。
 Master Hōnen and seven of his disciples were exiled, and four other disciples were executed.
 The Master was banished to a place called Hata in Tosa province and, stripped of ordination, given a secular name: the male Fujii no Motohiko; he was seventy-six years old.
 Shinran was exiled to Echigo province. His secular name was Fujii no Yoshizane; he was thirty-five.
 浄聞房 備後国、澄西禅光房 伯耆国、好覚房 伊豆国、行空法  本房 佐渡国、幸西成覚房・善恵房二人、同遠流に定まる。しかるに無動寺の善題大僧正、これを申しあづかると云々。遠流の人々。 以上八人なりと云々。 [Among the others exiled:] Jōmon-bō, to Bingo province; Chōsai Zenkō-bō, to Hōki province; Kōkaku-bō, to Izu province; Gyōkū Hōhon-bō, to Sado province.
 It was also determined that Kōsai Jōkaku-bō and Zenne-bō both receive banishment, but the former abbot of Mudō-ji temple took them under his custody.
 The persons sentenced to banishment were the eight listed above.
 死罪に行はるる人々。
 一番 西意善綽房
 二番 性願房
 三番 住蓮房
 四番 安樂房
 二位法印尊長の沙汰なり。
Those sentenced to death:

1.Saii Zenshaku-bō;
2.Shōgan-bō;
3.Jūren-bō;
4.Anraku-bō.

These were the sentences passed down by Dharma-seal Sonchō of the second court rank.
 親鸞、僧儀を改めて、俗名を賜ふ。よつて僧にあらず俗にあらず、 しかるあひだ、禿の字をもつて姓となして、奏聞を経られをはんぬ。 かの御申し状、いまに外記庁に納まると云々。流罪以後、愚禿親鸞 と書かしめたまふなり。 Shinran was deprived of his status as priest and given a secular name. Hence, he was neither monk nor layman. Because of this, he took as his own surname the word Toku (stubble-haired). For this, he applied to the court and obtained permission. This petition is still preserved in the Office of Records.
 After his exile, he signed his name Gutoku Shinran.
