All Walks of Life

This joke Tweet reminds me of an excerpt from a famous Buddhist text called the Karaniya Metta Sutta:

Whatever living creatures there be,
Without exception, weak or strong,
Long, huge or middle-sized,
Or short, minute or bulky,

Whether visible or invisible,
And those living far or near,
The born and those seeking birth,
May all beings be happy!

Translation by Ven. Acharya Buddharakkhita

Buddhism, from its inception has always acknowledged that living beings come in many forms, and that all of them deserve our goodwill (metta). This includes such strange, ancient creatures as trilobites, and modern creatures such as goblin sharks, echidnas and so on. This also includes people from all walks of life.

May all beings be well, and free from harm.
